Smart Selection

By default, Smart selection chooses high-potential items from your catalog and automatically includes new items. You can also apply filters, such as category, brand, or sale status, to refine which items are included.

Overview

A Smart Selection campaign is created at the ad account level. Once it is running, Moloco:

  • Chooses the items to advertise from the advertiser's eligible catalog, rather than requiring the advertiser to pick them.
  • Reselects items that are performing well and were recently added to the advertiser’s catalog

The advertiser provides the inputs that define success (a budget and a goal) and Moloco handles item selection and within those constraints.

Why offer Smart Selection

Smart Selection is designed for advertisers who do not have the time, scale, or expertise to manage granular campaigns:

  • Lower effort to get started. An advertiser can launch with a budget and a goal instead of building a campaign structure.
  • Broader catalog coverage. Items that an advertiser would not have thought to promote can still be selected if they are likely to perform.
  • Continuous optimization. Item selection and bids keep adapting as catalog, inventory, and performance change, without manual maintenance.
  • Higher participation. Advertisers who churned or never activated because campaign management was too complex have a simpler way to spend.

How it works

One campaign per ad account

An ad account can have one Smart Selection campaign. It runs alongside any manual campaigns the advertiser already has, so an advertiser can use Smart Selection for broad coverage while continuing to run manual campaigns for specific priorities.

Item selection

Moloco selects items from the advertiser's catalog that are eligible to advertise. Selection is automatic and is refreshed on an ongoing basis, so:

  • Newly added catalog items can become eligible for selection without the advertiser creating anything.
  • Items that stop being eligible stop being advertised (e.g. items that go out of stock).
  • The set of advertised items changes over time as performance data accumulates.

Bidding and optimization

The advertiser sets a budget and a goal, such as a target return on ad spend. Moloco then manages bids for the selected items to pursue that goal within the budget. Bids are adjusted automatically as performance data changes; the advertiser does not set per-item bids.

What advertisers see

In Campaign Manager, a Smart Selection campaign appears alongside the advertiser's other campaigns. Advertisers can:

  • Create the Smart Selection campaign by setting a budget and a goal.
  • Pause, resume, or update the budget and goal.
  • View campaign-level performance, including spend, impressions, clicks, and attributed performance metrics.
  • View item-level reporting showing which items were selected and how each performed.

Item-level reporting is important for transparency. Since Moloco chooses the items, advertisers use this view to understand what was advertised on their behalf.

Limitations and important notes

  • An ad account can have only one Smart Selection campaign.
  • Advertisers cannot choose which items are advertised, and cannot set per-item bids.
  • Item selection changes over time; the set of advertised items is not fixed.
  • Items that become ineligible, such as out-of-stock items, are dropped from serving automatically.
  • Smart Selection spends within the budget the advertiser sets and the ad account's available balance.

FAQ

Can an advertiser use Smart Selection and manual campaigns at the same time?

Yes. A Smart Selection campaign runs alongside manual campaigns in the same ad account, so an advertiser can combine automatic coverage with manually managed campaigns.

Can an advertiser choose which items Smart Selection advertises?

No. Moloco selects the items from the advertiser's eligible catalog. Advertisers who want to control specific items should use a manual campaign for those items.

What happens when a selected item goes out of stock?

It stops being advertised. Item eligibility is re-evaluated on an ongoing basis, so out-of-stock and otherwise ineligible items are dropped automatically.

Does the advertiser set bids?

No. The advertiser sets a budget and a goal, and Moloco manages bids for the selected items to pursue that goal.

Can an advertiser see which items were advertised?

Yes. Item-level reporting shows which items Moloco selected and how each item performed.

How many Smart Selection campaigns can an ad account have?

One.
